Gritty slippers for James van Riemsdyk's baby girl will make for adorable picture

Hockey has been on the mind all week and even the simple discussion of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs has excited fans for the return of their favorite sport — even if things are going to look different this time around.  While the majority of new rules and procedures were laid out Tuesday thanks to commissioner Gary Bettman, there is still a lot of unknown territory. This format has never been done before, but having a plan in place is the first step to turning concepts into something tangible.  One of the biggest changes won't be the additional eight teams, the hub city locations or the fact the NHL has the potential to run into the late summer months, but rather the element — or lack thereof — of fan attendance.  The safety of fans and players is without a doubt the biggest priority and as we adapt to the "new norm" for the foreseeable future, this is just one of the many things that will have to be endured.  On the surface, it stinks. Hockey is not back quite yet, but we know what it is going to look like when it does return. The NHL revealed its playoff format for when the 2019-20 season resumes and 24 teams will get the chance to compete for Lord Stanley's Cup. Since finishing the regular season was not feasible, a change to the playoff format for this season was warranted. When you change the postseason rules midseason, however, it is not going to affect every team the same way. Some teams will benefit from those changes and others will not. After a few days to digest and analyze the new format and what it will mean, here are the big winners and losers. Winner: Chicago, Montreal With tight playoff races in either conference, you can understand why the NHL felt it would be fair to allow more than just 16 teams the chance to compete for the Cup. Having said, that, most people probably would have been fine with just 20 teams, maybe even 22. But inlcuding teams like the Chicago Blackhawks and Mon

Three orphaned baby otters play together in heartwarming video at North Carolina Zoo

Gambar
Three orphaned otter pups are now a "foster" family at the North Carolina Zoo. The North American river otters were recently found in eastern North Carolina and are now being cared for at the North Carolina Zoo's Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, the zoo said in a news release on Wednesday, which is World Otter Day. The hope is that the otters can eventually be released into the wild, the zoo said. One of the otters, a 14-16 week old female, was rescued from a parking lot in Raeford in early May by A Wild Life: Center for Wildlife Rescue, Rehabilitation and Release, and brought to the zoo on May 12, according to the release. The other two, both males, were rescued by Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter in Newport and came to the zoo on May 13. One is about 6 weeks old and was found in a roadway after heavy rain. The other is abut 8 weeks old, and was found near a bridge after its mother was hit by a car, the zoo says. Breaking news & more Sign up for one of our many n

Baby steps: Pac-12 joins peer conferences in allowing players to return for workouts

Gambar
The Pac-12 announced Tuesday that voluntary, on-campus workouts for athletes could begin as soon as June 15, "subject to the decision of each individual campus and where permissible by relevant governmental entities." The move comes with the conference-wide suspension of team activities expiring May 31 and follows return-to-campus decisions by other leagues, including the SEC, which will allow workouts beginning June 8. Pac-12 presidents, athletic directors and conference officials have been in constant contact with a medical advisory committee, which includes public health and infectious disease experts. The conference provided a detailed summary of the protocols and procedures for athletes to return to campus and to the athletic facilities. "As educational institutions, our highest obligation is to the health and welfare of our students, faculty, and staff," said Colorado chancellor Phil DiStefano, chair of the Pac-12 CEO Group, said in a news release. &

Why Tiger Woods’ dazzling play was the biggest story in a Match full of intrigue

Gambar
By: Alan Shipnuck May 24, 2020 Tiger Woods was dialed in for The Match II. Getty Images The Match II was glorious anarchy, a beautiful train wreck that offered the mindless entertainment a wary nation desperately needs. But amid all the televised yukking and wilding-out on Twitter there was one very momentous development: Tiger Woods is back, baby.  When professional golf came to a grinding halt in mid-March due to the coronavirus, Woods was battling both his swing and his body. With the Masters bearing down on him Tiger was serially avoiding tournament golf, trying to buy time. The halting of the season c

My baby's being born same time my man is murdered — the beginning and end

Gambar
It's a little after 8 p.m. on January 14, 2020, and I'm posted up at a table at Motor House, the studio/bar where my one of my best friends, photographer Devin Allen, hosts the monthly Artist Talks series. I keep an eye on my phone waiting for a text from my wife Caron as I wait for my turn on stage, while friends and friends of friends bring rounds of drinks around. The mood is celebratory but we aren't celebrating anything specific, exactly. It's not a particularly special day in America, but every day above ground in Baltimore is kind of special. We're a relatively small city with an extremely high murder rate, and we had just closed out 2019 with 348 homicides. At this event, Devin interviews local creators on stage over drinks. A group of artists, including me, had been invited that night to recap the work we did in 2019 and share what we were planning for 2020. Liquor flows in streams running in every direction at this event, so I couldn't ask my pregnan

JVR and his wife Lauren welcomed a baby girl, Scarlett Everly earlier this month. "The silver lining of all this: I get to spend more time at home, enjoy all those little moments, great to be home for all that," Riemsdyk tells 6abc sportscaster Jeff Skversky from his home in Minnesota. JVR also wants to be back on the ice, after all, playing hockey for the Flyers is his first love. "It's been nice to spend the extra time at home, but ultimately hockey is what I love to do as well. If we can find a way that's safe and appropriate to get things going again, that would be awesome," he said. Van Riemsdyk, who is on the NHL's Return to Play committee, is optimistic they will be able to finish the season at some point. JVR tells 6abc that lots of different scenarios are being d

Johnson’s talc-based baby powder no longer sold in U.S. Canada amid claims it causes cancer

Gambar
Johnson & Johnson is ending sales of its iconic talc-based Johnson's Baby Powder in the U.S. and Canada, where demand has dwindled amid thousands of lawsuits claiming it has caused cancer. The world's biggest maker of health care products said Tuesday the talc-based powder will still be sold outside the U.S. and Canada. "Demand for talc-based Johnson's Baby Powder in North America has been declining due in large part to changes in consumer habits and fueled by misinformation around the safety of the product and a constant barrage of litigation advertising," the company said. J&J faces about 19,400 cases alleging its talcum powder caused users to develop ovarian cancer, through use for feminine hygiene, or mesothelioma, a cancer that strikes the lungs and other organs. Of the cases that have been tried, J&J has had 12 wins, 15 losses and seven mistrials. All of the losses

Dan Gelston, Ap Sports Writer Updated 10:47 am PDT, Friday, May 15, 2020 PHILADELPHIA (AP) — James van Riemsdyk can't keep track of the secondary assists while his family is quarantined with his in-laws: it's all hands on deck in while the Philadelphia Flyers star and his wife celebrated the birth of their daughter. And JVR could use the extra hand -- he's still recovering from a broken finger that cost him the final three games before the NHL season was suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic. Riverdale's 12 Most Ridiculous Names From Baby Teeth to Poppa Poutine

Gambar
Riverdale has given us a lot of wonderful things over the past four seasons, from steamy teen romances to juicy murder mysteries. But what we'll cherish most of all, we think, are the inexplicably odd character names. Yes, Riverdale does come from the Archie comics universe, and some of these names probably sound better inside a comic book panel than they do spoken aloud by an actual human being. (Besides, it's all part of the show's charm, isn't it?) But we're not here to mock Riverdale for cutesy alliteration like Toni Topaz, Fangs Fogarty and Penny Peabody. Nah, those are mere child's play, compared to some of the doozies we have here. We're talking about the names that forced us to pause and rewind to make sure we heard correctly: "Wait… is that really his name?!" More from TVLine So with Season 4 of Riverdale hitting Netflix today, we thought we'd celebrate by ranking the most outlandish character names across all four seasons, including H

How to Throw a Virtual Baby Shower That's Actually Fun

Gambar
From Oprah Magazine As social distancing efforts stretch on, more and more families are spending milestone events apart. Weddings, birthdays, holidays like Father's Day, and yes—baby showers—have all been affected. Thankfully, though, many of these traditions don't have to be flat-out cancelled. There's another option: online gatherings. And while these alternate plans might initially seem like a disappointment, there are even some very real pros to celebrating this way, says event planner Allison Carter of Allison Carter Celebrates. "Before social distancing, showers often consisted of local family and friends getting together to celebrate the beautiful mama-to-be," says Carter. "Now, we have a special opportunity to open that circle up and have all of their loved ones present to celebrate, like grandmas that may not have been able to travel or best friends that live in different states. But what exactly is a virtual baby shower? And how do you throw a gathe

As demand for food skyrockets due to coronavirus food banks play catch-up

Gambar
Ofelia Jiménez didn't think her family would need to rely on a food pantry -- not again. But after her son's hours at McDonald's were cut due to the coronavirus pandemic, her husband's $1,500 monthly pension was not enough to keep everyone fed. The family had been coming for years to St. Margaret's, a Catholic charity near the intersection of the San Diego and Century freeways, to get help with food. After Jiménez and her husband paid off their home in Inglewood, she figured she wouldn't need to come back. But this spring, the family again found itself struggling to pay a car note, insurance and utility bills and to buy food. "I've been so worried," said Jiménez, 60. "Without this help, I don't know where we would be." Across L.A. County, a record number of families have flocked to food pantries since mid-March, as more than half the region's residents have lost their jobs. It's a challenge many food banks have met with remark
